‘I’m Megan Wynne. My partner Liam and I have been visiting Erddig, in Wrexham, since we were kids. Now we bring our own children – Emlyn, aged 3, and Will, who’s 1.’
Wild in the woods
We love visiting the Wolf’s Den natural play area, especially in autumn when all the leaves, conkers and acorns are spread across the woodland floor for the children to collect and explore. Emlyn really enjoys climbing, balancing and challenging himself on the rope swings and balance beams, and spotting insects and wildlife as he plays.
Core memories
Erddig’s annual Apple Harvest Celebration (26–27 September and 3–4 October 2026) is a highlight of the year. We have a go at apple-themed arts and crafts and try games like ‘hook the apple’. You can help with apple picking, and maybe even buy some to take home.
Scoops and sips
Every visit comes with its own ritual: a warming coffee from the Hayloft café for me and Liam, and Emlyn is always keen for an ice cream – whatever the weather or time of year!
House and home
We often explore the house and the outbuildings. The portraits and photographs of past house staff members are fascinating – like stepping into another time. Our boys love the collection of old cars and the stables, and our eldest always lingers in the nursery, tempted by the toys on display.
A garden for all seasons
Seasonal changes mean every visit is different. The children love learning the names of all the flowers as they bloom in the borders. In the cooler months, it’s so peaceful to pause in front of the house and watch the mist rise over the water of the garden canal.

If you have...
An hour: Explore the servants’ quarters to find out what life was like working ‘below stairs’ in the early 20th century.
A day: Take a seasonal walk around the 486-hectare (1,200-acre) estate, or tick off some of our ‘50 things’ activities.
A weekend: Head eight miles south of Erddig to explore 13th-century Chirk Castle. The estate has two holiday cottages: Home Farm Cottage and Ty’r Stocmon.
